This outdoor concert in Kodaira Chuo Park on November 23rd, 2010 included several different musicians - some of them very nice to listen to.  (Well - they were all good, but naturally some were better than others!)

This exhibition (2010/11/22-27) by Takita Ako (瀧田亜子) at Nabis Gallery (なびす画廊) is one that I really wanted to see - based on the wall-size very cool looking picture on the promotional card - but I ran out of time on my last visit to galleries in Ginza.  So - while I wasn't able to see this exhibition, I would like to show you the promotional card for it nonetheless.  この展示会は、見えなかったが、絵葉書の絵は、凄く面白そうので、絵葉書をここでアップします。

Seko Toru (瀬古徹展) Exhibition at Ai Gallery (藍ギャラリー)

This exhibition (2010/11/15-20) by Seko Toru (瀬古徹展) at Ai Gallery (藍ギャラリー) consists of a series of shapes (one shown on the promotional card) offset from the wall, producing a subtle three-dimensional effect.  Looking closely at one (and reading the card), it turns out that they are thin boards wrapped in canvas and then painted with oil paints.
瀬古徹展 / 藍ギャラリー

This exhibition requires stopping for a minute and taking a good look - long enough to perceive the shape, the 3D-effect, and the faint shadows cast on the wall. この展示会の理解は何秒間(一瞬より長く)がかかる。まず, 非常にシンプルに見えるが, よく見ると、作品の形、三次元な感じと壁の影を気がつく。

Okura Hitomi (大倉ひとみ) Exhibition at Gallery 2 Plus (ギャラリーツープラス)

This exhibition (2010/11/01-14) by Okura Hitomi (大倉ひとみ) at Gallery 2+ (ギャラリーツープラス) consisted of pictures of old-style wooden apartments.  Upon arriving in Japan in 1984, I thought this type of building had a lot of nice attributes, but they were just considered old and ready for demolition by most of the locals I talked to.  Now that they have been nearly eradicated from the city, some people are becoming attracted to the same positive aspects of this type of structure I noticed before - thus this collection of nihonga paintings on washi focusing exclusively on them.

These wooden structures were designed to have natural air flow - an aspect of new sealed-air-system buildings that is nearly universally horrible - and natural light from windows - another horrible aspect of the center of large new buildings which rely 100% on evil florescent lighting, and so these old buildings are vastly more comfortable to be in than new structures.  The bad aspects of the old buildings were inadequate electrical wiring, no insulation (very cold in the winter!), and inadequate plumbing.  So while people moving into new structures have been initially happy to have more space, better plumbing, better wiring, better (sometimes) earthquake protection, and more modern acceptance, the lack of natural light and air is beginning to be valued more highly - although I think most people don't consciously realize the effects of bad air and evil lighting - they *feel* better while in old wooden structures and attribute it simply to nostalgia.  Bipeds need to pay more attention to their environment I think....

Mystery Woman Exhibition at Gallery Musashi Ginza (銀座ギャラリームサシ)

This exhibition (November 2010) by... Mystery Woman... at Gallery Musashi Ginza (銀座ギャラリームサシ) consisted of many large collages - as shown in the picture below (which the artist gave me permission to take).  Why do I say "Mystery Woman"?  Because, as I write this, the exhibition info hasn't been updated at the Gallery Musashi website and there was no promotional card... and I forgot to ask her what her name was when I met her.  She told me that she's been having an annual exhibition for 45 years now!  If I can find out what her name is, I'll update this entry!

Sunagawa Tatsumasa (砂川達政) Exhibition at Gallery-Q

At first glance, this exhibition (2010/11/08-13) by Sunagawa Tatsumasa (砂川達政) at Gallery-Q seemed like other exhibitions, but as I stood and contemplated the paintings, there was something about their physical depth that made them seem very solid and real; the way a textured wall in a room with history is.  (Among other things, the artist used clay and sand in the creation of the paintings, so they really are similar to some old walls in their texture.)  My conclusion when looking at the painting shown on the promotional card (first image below) is that if it were hanging on a modern smooth wall, it's the sort of thing you could stare into while thinking about something....  And then I moved on to the last image (in the order that I viewed them that is - the second image below), and... [see below]...
砂川達政 / Gallery-Q
... as I stood there contemplating it (and the original has much more depth than any photograph can show) with the artist standing beside me also looking at it, I found myself feeling happy and... what?... enthusiastic/euphoric... fun... yes! - that's it!  "Fun" is the word!  I was surprised to realize this spontaneous feeling and I still wonder at it.  Does this painting emanate fun rays by virtue of materials used and emotion input by the artist?  Or was I getting a vicinity-high by standing next to the artist who said the picture is a favorite of his?  Maybe both?  This is one of the reasons I prefer autobiographies over biographies and art by live artists over art by dead artists.  I like to get things from their source - not someone else's interpretation of what someone else was thinking.  When the source is standing right beside you, you not only get their words directly, you get their radio waves - and the full picture can come in loudly and clearly.
